Being a work at home mom is one of the biggest blessings to me, our kids, and for our family. I get to continue being a stay at home mom with the girls, and at the same time I feel like I can help provide for our family.
There are times when I am able to put my work on pause to be with them or go to the school events and doctor appointments, or I can put my work on pause to help move trucks around and help Sam, and then there are even times when I am able to put other things on pause to make sure I have the work that I need done, done.
Sometimes people here the phrase “work at home mom” and they automatically think ya right, or that is a spammy job, or that its silly that I don’t go and get a “real” job.
And what I say to them is: yes. I do work at home and make an income while being at home with my kids. I do legit work and it’s at my own discretion, in a definitely non spammy way.
On that note, I will share what I have learned from being a work at home mom:
How to manage my time.
I have to admit, when I was just a stay at home mom with job from home, it was easy to not have routines, plan ahead, or make the best of my time. I have learned (and am still learning) how to manage my time to accomplish everything that needs done in a day.
I have slowly become a morning person and can get quite a few important things done in the mornings so that whatever comes at me during the day, I can still get done as well.
I have also learned how to discipline myself in the area of finding balance between my family and my work.
I’ve cut out things that are time wasters if it takes away my attention from either my family or my work. Examples: Facebook or Instagram scrolling. Pinterest surfing. Endless Netflix episodes.
I have learned that planning ahead and being prepared ahead of time is really, really worth it in the blogging world. Even planning ahead as a mom pays off, because with kids, you never know what will happen.
I’ve really learned a lot about life balance from being a work at home mom. I’ve found easier ways to balance family time as a blogger and how to set time blocks for certain activities like housework. If you don’t have good balance between work and family, one or the other will get set on the back burner or you will get burnt out.
I believe balance is so important between yourself, family, work, and leisure activities. I try to know what my top priorities of the day are, get them done, and still have time and energy to other things that will benefit myself or my family.
This goes along with learning how to manage my time well, but working from home teaches you to work hard. Just because you work from home doesn’t mean it’s easier. There are still deadlines and requirements to get posted for certain companies, and if you want to get paid, you best get it done!
As well as doing your paid work, it makes you (sometimes) get your housework and chores done better too, because you know it eventually needs done and you have other things you need to get done.
I’m a mother first, and my kids and husband are my top priority. But from being a work at home mom, you also learn what your other priorities are as well. You will learn that some things that you are doing in your life doesn’t actually bring you happiness or an income, and it’s really just wasting your time.
For instance, if other people don’t realize or even believe that you are a work at home mom, you may have to tell them you can’t make it to an event or outing because you have things you need to get done at home.
So you learn what is really important to you and what you really need to say yes to, because you don’t have to say yes to everything! Some things that you say yes to are not your top priorities and could actually be a waste of time and money. Think smart. 😉
How to Dream and Achieve Goals
Before becoming a work at home mom, I never really dreamed. Sure I set goals, hoped to make them, and sometimes forgot about which goals I even set for myself.
But now, especially since becoming a mom, I’ve started dreaming. Dreaming about so many things! Some things might be out of this world and some things might be just a goal to achieve that day. But it’s a good feeling and I am a huge dreamer, and I continue to have new dreams and goals every day and it makes me work harder towards them.
I think it’s important to have dreams and set goals in your life. It helps you work hard towards achieving them and feeling proud and good about yourself. It’s easier for me to dream now because I have seen some of my dreams come true while working from home, so the fear of the impossible has been wiped out of my mind.
With that being said, I also have learned how to set and achieve attainable goals. Goals that are a challenge, yet truly possible to eventually reach and succeed. If your goals are so far out of this world, you will probably not achieve those goals, and end up disappointed.
When to slow down.
While I do believe in checking things off of your to do list and working hard, I also am a huge fan of down time.
We all need it and if we don’t take time to rest and relax, it makes life complicated and stressful, and then we don’t perform as well as we could. Down time is crucial as a work at home mom, and I have learned to space out my work and take one thing at a time to not get stressed.
I am also all for having down time together as a family, and instead of vacationing or traveling, stay at home and just sit down and watch a movie together. Sleep in, eat a late breakfast and catch up on a few odd jobs. It keeps everyone relaxed!

And now I have to tell you all about some of the encouragement that personally helped me to continue being a work at home mom and to achieve my dreams!
Through my blog, I have been very familiar with Crystal Paine, or you may know her as the Money Saving Mom, and have even been blessed enough to pretty much work with her!
I have been on her launch team for her New York Best Seller’s book Say Good bye To Survival Mode, I was on her launch team for her life changing online class Makeover Your Mornings, and now I am on her launch team once again for her new book!
In Crystal’s new book, she shares a plethora of tips and personal stories from herself and other women who have made a successful income from home. She also shares her flops at business, and how she overcame those failures to get better in the future.
I learned a lot from this book but more importantly, gained so much motivation and inspiration.
Here’s some important factors that this book covers:
- how to overcome financial stresses and learn the power of financial freedom
- learning crucial things about yourself such as skills, weaknesses, passions, and talents, and how to use them to create a profit
- how to create your business dream, action plan, and your own personal formula for success
- what type of business to create or what profitable products would be best for you, such as online income and blogging, ebooks, a brick and mortar business, or direct sales companies, just for examples
- defining your “why” and creating your own business mission statement
- how to brand, market, grow, and network your new business, without feeling overwhelmed or fearful
- how to overcome discouraging thoughts or tough times in your business ventures
- how to bloom and prosper through your business to help and give to others
I also really, really love the Money Making Mom Manifesto at the end of the book. It’s basically a summary of all of the points in the book, and I printed it off to look at daily and remind myself of why I am being a work at home mom, and to always try my best in achieving my goals. You can get your copy of the Money Making Mom Manifesto here.
I gained so much from this book, and I know you will too! Whether you are already working from home, or not even sure where to start in being a work at home mom, this book will fill you with encouragement and knowledge in making a plan and action to succeed!
