Mommy blogs are all the rage these days. Being a mommy blogger is fun and rewarding, but that comes after hours and hours of hard work.
I started my mom blog when I was new to being a stay at home mom, to make other mom friends and read parenting tips and stories similar to my own. Now this blog has turned into a blessing for our family. I get a lot of questions on where to begin and wanted to write this post for those of you who have asked me. 🙂
So now you’re wondering, how can I get started? And that’s exactly why I’m writing this post!
Here’s some tips on how to start a mommy blog:
Find a few mommy blogs you like to read before you publish your first post, and tell them who you are and what you are doing. They will more than likely give you a warm welcome to the blogging community and maybe even share your post with their friends for a little boost. Don’t be afraid to tell people you are a newbie blogger, they will be inviting to that.
Make sure you have an ‘about me’ page on your blog! This is so important! If people don’t know who you are, or can’t see a picture of your face on your blog, you have a very high probability of them clicking away from your blog before even checking out your posts. People like to picture the face and know the person they are reading from.
2} Make relationships.
If another blogger comments on your posts, comment back! Tell them thank you, or even a simple “Hi, welcome to my blog!”. Interacting with your readers creates relationships, which in turn creates loyal readers. They will check your blog daily for new work.
Follow a few (don’t go overboard- that’s called spam!) other bloggers on social media. Say hi, and then watch what they post. Like it or comment on it, maybe even say that you have a similar post to theirs.
*Keep this in mind though- there’s a fine line between making relationships and breaking relationships in the blogging world. DO. NOT. SPAM. Spamming is the quickest way to break your blogging relationships. Try not to share too many links without having a true, relevant comment. When people comment on my blog without a quality comment, and they just say “read my post at http://….”, I automatically delete that comment. It is free advertising, but you have to be smart about it. Same goes for any social media use- don’t plaster your links all over without actually engaging.
3} Find an idol blogger, follow their footsteps.
Find someone who is experienced, popular, and knowledgeable about what they do. When I first started blogging, I found two bigger mommy bloggers who had been blogging for a number of years. I watched their style of writing, how they engaged with their audience, even their design layout. This helped me tremendously. And do NOT be afraid to talk to them, even if they are some huge famous person. You never know what could happen, the worst is they just won’t reply at all. OR it could turn into a business opportunity and blessing, like it did to me. Don’t be afraid to try.
Just don’t copy your idol. (another way to break a relationship!) If you like their design, try something similar. If you like their writing, see what or why you like it. Example- are they honest, funny, share pictures…etc.
4} Find your purpose in the blogging world.
Didn’t even know there was such a thing? Me either, when I first started blogging. But there is. Think of it this way, are you blogging for: a) hobby, b) to have mommy friends, c) to make money, d) to share tips? These are just examples, but a good guideline to go by. After a few posts you will feel the direction you can go in. Don’t cut yourself short though, remember when I said don’t be afraid, you never know what will come out of something?! 😉 So find what you want to be, and just go for it!
5} Watch out for the online opinions.
They are everywhere. Especially in the mom blog world. I have only had a few negative comments on a breastfeeding post, but other than that I have had sweet and nice comments. In the mom blog niche, there are solutions for anything you can think of. And then there are the opinions and solutions to do it a different or “right” way. Be careful if you are sharing tips, just remember it might not work for everyone the way it worked for you. Be prepared for mean comments and how you will handle them. But even if they are a negative comments, I wouldn’t delete them right away. It shows interaction on your blog and that drives traffic. Just reply back with why you said what you did, don’t get nasty about it! 🙂
6} Be consistent.
This part can be hard at times. Being consistent means posting regularly, commenting on other blogs, posting to social media multiple times a day, and on top of all of that coming up with new ideas for future blog posts. Figure out what works for you and stick to a regular schedule of that. If you can only post once a week, do that. Just don’t post three blog posts in one day, and then not share a thing for the next two weeks. Being consistent with anything related to your blog will keep you name out there and keep the traffic to your blog. Read my helpful article How to Promote Your Blog Posts.
7} Create a blogging schedule.
In the beginning, it will seem like you can just go with the flow of posting and it will all fall together. But once you get going, whether for a hobby or blogging for money, you will need some sort of schedule to keep your blog organized. Especially if you are monetizing your blog, it’s a good idea to get a weekly planner to write down your posts, sponsored post’s due dates, guest posts, ideas, everything.
Your blogging schedule is important, but personally I think finding a schedule to balance your blog and family is most important. Family comes first. There have been times when I had to take a step back and take a break from blogging to spend time with my family because I was not balanced in between the two. Make it a priority to have your scheduled time blocks for family, meals, nap times, and then blogging. I find that as a stay at home mom, blogging during nap times is most effective, and also doesn’t leave me feeling guilty for blogging while they are playing and wanting my attention.
Also- plan ahead! This way you won’t be having to hustle to meet deadlines on posts or if you have a post in mind but forgot to publish it. When you plan and work ahead it leaves room for adjustment if you have a family emergency.
8} Be unique, but be YOU.
Share your honest opinions. Use your unique features to help your blog stand out and be eye catching. Just remember to not misrepresent who you really are. Keep in mind that once you publish a post, the entire world online can read it. This includes family, friends, even people who you might not like and would rather them not see your blog post. Don’t publish something that could eventually hurt your family or friend’s feelings. Share enough details about your life that keeps your readers interested in you, and wanting to know more, but if you don’t want to share your entire life, you don’t have to.
9} Realize how much work goes into blogging.
10} Try new things, all the time.
11} Have fun with it and be proud of your blog!
