It’s official. Instagram is now bigger and has more users than Twitter. You know what that means, right?
So why not use this opportunity to successfully promote your brand or business?!
Are you on Instagram? Are you using it to market a business? Are you using it correctly?
If you want to meet your goals and increase sales, try using these tips to promote your business on Instagram.
1. Be Socially Active
It’s easy to scroll though the zillions of photos on Instagram. So while you’re at it, you might as well make your name be seen. Take the time to ‘like’ certain photos or comment on them. By doing this, that person who owns the photo will see your name on their notifications. Usually they will take a look at your profile to see who is liking their stuff.
Comment on photos that appeal to you, and make it a meaningful comment. Try giving them a compliment that will in turn start a conversation. Conversations will lead to relationships on Instagram, which will possibly turn into followers and buyers.
2. Post Often and Consistently
My personal goal is to post at least one photo everyday. Sometimes I do more, which is fine too, but keep it consistent.
Don’t post one photo on Monday, then wait until Friday to post 7 photos. Also, be careful with ‘overgramming’. That would be posting multiple photos that are similar, at the same time. If your followers love you enough, they will enjoy it, but most of the time it will annoy people because it is clogging their news feed.
3. Promote Subtly
Let’s say you are using Instagram to sell a certain product, (which is very smart, so listen up!). Instagram is such a helpful tool in making sales. You can easily target your buyers with hashtags (we will get to that in a minute), and easily start conversations about your products.
BUT- you can me your own worst enemy if you don’t know what you’re doing.
For example, I use Instagram to promote my blog, my oil business, as well as sharing day to day life photos. I have learned that by sharing a photo of how you use a product or what you use it for, (see example here) it can generate more leads and sales than sharing a photo saying “buy this!”.
Also, do not share only photos of the things you are trying to sell (unless your page is an established company). That is an automatic turn off. Try sharing just a few promotional photos in between multiple personal photos. Kind of like just sneaking them in there. This way it’s not overbearing to your followers and it sparks their interest at the same time.
4. Always Respond to Comments
If someone comments on your photo, this means they took the time to show interest to you. Anyone who comments could be a possible buyer! Always respond back to them in some way.
When you do respond to them, it’s important to comment directly back to them. To do this, type your comment and tag them in it by using the @ symbol and then their user name. This way they will know when you comment back to them. Be nice to them. 🙂
5. Share Quality Photos
When sharing any photo on Instagram, take the time to make sure it is a high quality photo. Edit, crop, adjust the brightness, and filter it. Be careful though, over edited pictures can look fake, which can be a turn off to some people.
The best pictures to share that will get the most attention on Instagram are bright, clear, and clean. Stay away from dark, shadowy, and grainy pictures. Also, don’t over-saturate your pictures. I have found that some of my photos that get the most interactions are the ones with the least editing.
6. Have an Attention Grabbing Bio
Use the space in your biography to really stand out to your followers and other users who may stumble upon your profile. Explain who you are, what you do, what you love, etc.
The most important thing to remember to share in your bio is a link to your blog or business page! This is the only place on Instagram where you can have a clickable link so use it! This is a “must” is you are trying to promote your business on Instagram.
7. Use the Explore feature
The cool thing about Instagram is it will share profiles and pictures with you in the Explore section, based on who you follow and what you like already. It’s easy to find similar people to you in this section. Follow them, like and comment on their photos, and form a relationship. More than likely they will return the favor.
8. Use Hashtags
I’m sure all of you know about hashtags but I do know there are some people who have no idea what a hashtag even is. You can use the # sign and then type a word. It will then become clickable, sending you to an entire new page where everyone who uses that same hashtag will have their photos there. You can use up to 30 hashtags on one picture, but I like to add my hashtags in a separate comment that my caption.
Use popular hashtags on every picture you share on Instagram. This will get soooo many more users to your page. Make sure the hashtags are somewhat represent-able to what your photo is, but you can also use hashtags like #instagood, #instamood, #tagsforlikes also. I have gotten a lot more interaction by using hashtags.
Be ware though, certain hashtags can bring spammy users to your account as well. The big one I have found is using the hashtag #stayathomemom. For some reason all the ‘work from home’ (spammy) companies target this hashtag. As soon as you use it, they will sell their pitch on your picture. Don’t feel bad about deleting the comment and blocking them, they are not doing you any good. Speaking of spam…..
9. Don’t Be Spammy
People like to follow the lives of real people. This means share things of your day to day living. Do not share multiple photos of products for sale in a row all at once (unless you are having a flash sale- more on that later). When you are commenting on other people’s photos, do not say things like “check out my pictures”, or “cool picture, follow me”. Honestly, when I get those kinds of comments they are automatically deleted. That is bad advertising. Act like a real person, not a computer, use common online manners and etiquette. Create friends and relationships.
10. Use A Follow Service
Many people don’t know about this tip either. But it is so useful! There are many apps and services that you can use that will track your followers, who you follow, and who interacts on your page. I use the app called Insta-Follow, it’s a free app, but you can upgrade to get more features.
The reason for using a service like this is to track your most valuable followers and the ones that benefit you or don’t benefit you. If you follow 30 people who don’t follow you back, is that benefiting you? Probably not. Only invest time in the followers that will invest in you in return.
Another tip about follower numbers- if you have 500 followers, and you are following 3,500 people, that looks bad. To me that looks spammy. Even if you are trying to build your followers, you have to keep in mind what looks normal to people. It’s better to have your follower numbers somewhat close in relation or even to have more followers than what you are following.
